Book Review: KING CAVE by Scarlett Dawn

It's the weekend! So that means YOU NEED TO WEEKEND READ! My last Monday Suggestion was all about the book KING HALL by Scarlett Dawn and how you needed to buy it immediately. Today, I will be trying to entice you to pre-order/buy KING CAVE, Book 2 in the Forever Evermore series!

First, let me do a little recap of my thoughts on KING HALL:
King Hall was filled with endearing characters and infused with a wonderfully exciting story line. It also contained a world so magical and intricate that I couldn't wait to get to the next page. Scarlett Dawn teleported me from my room and right into a story that had me laughing, crying, and everything in between while sitting on the edge of my seat. I fell in love with all of the characters and will gladly follow them to King Cave!

Now, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT KING CAVE!

Summed up in an honest first reaction: Holy crapsticks.

King Hall was an exciting romp through a fun, creative world of paranormals but King Cave was an insanely thrilling roller coaster ride that had me on the edge of my seat with my heart was in my throat!
What I think I love most about King Cave is how many layers it has. There was the emotional side that rocked me at times. (One scene around the first half--you people who read it know what I mean--had me grabbing for the tissues for real!) There was the action level that had me moving around while I was reading, readying myself with Lily and riding along for the excitement! And then there was the sexual level.

Let me just say, if you like Fifty Shades of Grey then you'll LOVE King Cave.
If you DON'T love Fifty Shades of Grey, then don't worry--King Cave is WAY better!

The sex scenes were fantastic if I do say so myself--wonderfully detailed and with a paranormal twist that made my intrigue level go through the roof. Whereas the sexual tension in King Hall was so thick you could cut it with a knife, King Cave not only cut it with a knife but served it on a golden platter of electrified scenes that will make you tingle in all the right ways.

Overall, King Cave in no way disappointed me. In fact, it exceeded my expectations! The exciting world that Dawn created continued to keep my interest high and my love for the characters only grew, especially with the fun addition of many new characters. The story itself was great and the ending...well, I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW, KTHANKS! If you enjoy a book that you can't stop reading, I highly suggest KING CAVE!

Pre-order now!
Release date set for January 1! That's one hell of a great way to start the New Year!

DONE with UNDONE

So, I wrote a book a month or so ago for a contest. It took me a week and totaled around 45,000 words. I called it UNDONE and it was sloppy, rushed, and 10,000 words shy of where it needed to be but, by golly, I finished it!

I didn't go on to the next tier of the contest but what could be more exciting than finally being able to say I finished a book from beginning to end? An editor contacting me asking for a longer, revised copy of my manuscript. Which is what happened!

Two days ago I resubmitted UNDONE, much happier with the plot, characters, and length (57,000~ words)!

Now I'm back to baby this lovely blog while also working on another manuscript which will be something of a Paranormal Romance > Cozy Mystery type deal. My future posts will revolve around books, writing things, and Pinterest obsessions!

What to expect in the very near future

Monday Suggestions 11/18

Oh, HEY! I'm back with a post about books you should read (AND I WANT YOU TO READ)!

I was SUPPOSED to back off from reading until I finished editing my manuscript but I mean, man, that was hard. I found a link to King Hall by Scarlett Dawn on Amazon and read the sample...then bought the book. So, let me try to convince you to do the same.

Book Blurb from King Hall's Goodreads' page:
King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.
Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing: survival. Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings. Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Rulers: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.
Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the Revolution.
My quick little review that will hopefully sway you to purchase this (now on sale) book: King Hall not only was filled with endearing characters and infused with a wonderfully exciting story line, but it also contained a world so magical and intricate that I couldn't wait to get to the next page. Scarlett Dawn teleported me from my room and right into a story that had me laughing, crying, and everything in between while sitting on the edge of my seat. I fell in love with all of the characters and will gladly follow them to King Cave!

This book has humor, steam, excitement, and ALL THE FEELS! Read it and let me know what you think!
Well, since I did a spotlight for King Hall, I feel like I should tell you about King Cave (Book 2) that's coming out on Jan. 1! (For the cover reveal post go here.) With how King Hall ended, I just can't wait for the sequel!

Here's the book blurb right from its Goodreads' page but I suggest you read Book 1 before diving into it so no spoilers happen!

The safe, comfortable world of Lily Ruckler and her fellow Mystical Kings and Queens is rocked to the core by the attacks at King Hall. Not only does Lily have to kill the Commoners attacking her people, she also has to assume the mantle of leadership, and bring the surviving Mysticals to King Cave.
It should have been too much, but she is not alone. Ezra becomes her rock, her best friend, the one person who understands. As Pearl and Jack struggle with inconsolable loss, Ezra and Lily work to keep the Mys community safe in their new home, and plan a deadly retaliation.
Their friendship saves them both...but it also draws attention. Whispers. Judgment. It's not normal for Shifters and Vampires to be friends, and when a horrifying truth is revealed, their relationship morphs from unusual to unspeakable. Lily is good at keeping secrets that could get her killed. Is she willing to risk Ezra's life as well?

You can pre-order King Cave starting Dec. 1! GET EXCITED! GET ON MY LEVEL!

Cover Reveal: King Cave by Scarlett Dawn

Holli and I have been busy. With book writing, baby forming, and day jobs galore we've kind of dropped off for a while. Well, NOT ANYMORE! I want to kick back my blogging habit with a cover reveal that just makes me giddy!

First, let me briefly tell you about a book I purchased recently and read within two days. It's called "King Hall" and it's by the talented Scarlett Dawn. (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Website, Twitter) I'm definitely putting it in my next Monday Suggestions post with more info. but here's a blurb from Book 1 in the Forever Evermore series:

But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.
Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the revolution.
I picked King Hall out on a whim and couldn't put it down. Scarlett Dawn makes a fascinating world with endearing characters that had me following along with vigor! HOWEVER, more on KH next week. Now let's treat those who are excited for "King Cave" and its cover reveal!

King Cave will be available to pre-order on December 1st, and available for purchase on January 1st!

Keep up with info. and add this to your TBR shelf on Goodreads!

Blurb:
The long-awaited sequel to the bestselling, award-winning King Hall: the revolution is here, but the most dangerous attack may come from within...

Jack of all trades and stereotypical black sheep, C. Elizabeth has been writing somewhat dark and morbid since that teen angst hit in the early 90's- probably because her dad was a mortician. After pursuing a degree in English, she changed gears to photography and design in 2006... although she kept penning stories for fun while reading the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde and Hemingway (whom she adores even though he was a huge douche canoe). In 2009, her life shifted considerably and she found herself writing Elegantly Wasted- helping her sort out a bunch of stupid feelings and other lame stuff.

Holli Anne's LITTLE Announcement

Well, I guess that image pretty much sums this blog up, but I'll say it anyway since it's so fun: I'm having a baby, and he's a boy!

I'm 18 weeks pregnant now (4.5 months for those who don't feel like doing the math), so almost half way there! It's been a whirlwind of emotions (and sicknesses and food aversions) since we found out, not only letting the news sink in but also moving to a house to accommodate our new little man.

Now that I'm REALLY nesting, I'm sure there will be plenty of little DIYs and home decorating blogs coming your way for every room in my new boxed-up house.

Side bar: We haven't given the little lad a name yet, so if you have any fun ones you think we should consider, feel free to pass them on.

I have a very special job, and you’re the only one who can pull it off,” Pop Sheedy said.
I’d been leaning forward, listening, but hearing this sent me reeling back several inches. “I’m honored, Pop. What did you have in mind?”
“I’m sending you up north to Pennsylvania. A place near Philadelphia called Balanova.”
“Balanova?” I’d never heard of the place. And I couldn’t think of a single person I knew who lived in Pennsylvania. “What’s in Balanova?”
“Revenge.”

Monday Suggestions 09/30

I'm SUPER excited about this week's Monday Suggestions! If you missed last Monday's post go here.

Sweet goodness, we are one day away from the release of UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED by C. Elizabeth Vescio (book two in The Wasted Series)!

Again, I've already read UW as a beta reader so I can say with confidence that it's a fun, exciting, and great read. I love the characters, the plot, and the wonderful writing. The main character Frankie makes me feel the feels, laugh out loud, and relate to her even in situations I'd never find myself in.

Straight from the Goodreads page for UW, here's the synopsis:
It's been a year since Francesca Fairholm met the rest of the Osiris team and the company heads, her two half brothers Nero and Lex. As they groom her for leadership, it's all Frankie can do to keep her cynical sarcasm in check as she starts training two new Strikers, avoids the romantic advances of Spark Dawson, and does her best to pry a little family history from her cold, distant Aunt Alexa.
With the pressure of her secret dual life building and her mother acting suspiciously, Frankie's sanity is pushed to the brink when she makes a grisly discovery that shakes the young Striker to her core. Despite her cousins' fear that her panic attacks signal a full mental breakdown, Frankie is positive she's not crazy. Finding clarity in her personal investigation into Osiris's origins, she uncovers more about the company than she would rather know.
As her life starts to unravel, things get deadly and, before she knows it, she's facing down an old target's pissed-off widow, an unstoppable mercenary, and the one thing she's most terrified of admitting to herself.
It's possible the whole situation won't explode in her face. Yeah, like Frankie has that kind of luck.
So,  I strongly suggest you purchase a copy of UW tomorrow! Just go here for links to Book 1 and Book 2.
This is a bit self-serving on my part, but I can't help but be excited about #SYTYCW2013! So You Think You Can Write is holding a Harlequin writing contest and I've entered!

First place will win a series publishing contract!

My entry is titled "Undone" and you can read the 100-word pitch here as well as the entire Chapter 1! If you like what you read and wouldn't mind supporting UNDONE, feel free to Like it / Tweet it / Comment on it / Share it!

I'd be eternally grateful and all that mushy jazz!

Once again, you can go here to view my submission!

Next week we'll have another To Watch, until then CHEERS!

Monday Suggestions 09/23

I've been wanting to do this Monday Suggestions thing for a while now and finally carved out some time to get down to business! Each Monday I'd like to suggest one book that you should read, one book that's coming out soon to get excited about, and one show to watch.

I hope you enjoy today's suggestions! If you have any of your own, leave a comment!

Don't let the name of this book throw you off. Do what I did and read the sample that Amazon and/or Barnes & Noble offer with most books. I purchased this Molly Harper book for my Kindle after reading most of the first chapter from the sample.

Let me level with you...I normally don't read werewolf books. Nothing against them, I just don't like books that are about nothing but the conflicts and journeys of the furry creatures. However, How to Flirt had so much more meat to it than just being a werewolf tale. (I wanted to say "tail.")

Summary
Northern Exposure Even in Grundy, Alaska, it’s unusual to find a naked guy with a bear trap clamped to his ankle on your porch. But when said guy turns into a wolf, recent southern transplant Mo Wenstein has no difficulty identifying the problem. Her surly neighbor Cooper Graham—who has been openly critical of Mo’s ability to adapt to life in Alaska—has trouble of his own. Werewolf trouble.

For Cooper, an Alpha in self-imposed exile from his dysfunctional pack, it’s love at first sniff when it comes to Mo. But Cooper has an even more pressing concern on his mind. Several people around Grundy have been the victims of wolf attacks, and since Cooper has no memory of what he gets up to while in werewolf form, he’s worried that he might be the violent canine in question.

If a wolf cries wolf, it makes sense to listen, yet Mo is convinced that Cooper is not the culprit. Except if he’s not responsible, then who is? And when a werewolf falls head over haunches in love with you, what are you supposed to do anyway? The rules of dating just got a whole lot more complicated. . .

Three reasons I dug this book
1. Mo was entertaining as hell. It's a first person POV so you get all of the fun internal dialogue from her. One of my favorite quotes from her was the first time she really interacts with Cooper: "Well, that cinched it. He was an asshole. I was definitely going to sleep with him." She isn't blind to his moody personality or his jackassary. She doesn't make excuses for him or pretend he's a saint. She also doesn't deny she wants to jump his bones.

2. Dear goodness, I love the secondary characters in this book. From the patrons at the diner to the overbearing hippie mother, there's a myriad of characters throughout the book that you just can't help but love. It makes almost every seen even more entertaining.

3. It's a mystery with a supernatural twist plus a love story! It's an easy read that has a sequel (which I'm currently reading) so you can keep on enjoying all the characters. Fun fact: The sequel doesn't follow Mo anymore BUT it follows someone close to her so she's still in it a lot!

UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED COMES OUT OCTOBER 1!

I was a beta reader and LET ME TELL YOU, you'll love it. Author C. Elizabeth Vescio is releasing one teaser picture a day until the first! To make sure you see each go here

If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out Elegantly Wasted (Book 1 of the Wasted Series) and its site here. Also, check out our site for more posts relating to EW and the series.

Now for yesterday's teaser picture! (For today's check out the Facebook later on tonight!)

I promise I'll branch out and stop suggesting to you (and everyone you know) watch Parks and Recreation. But, really. Go watch it.

Season 6 premieres Thursday and IT WILL BE EPIC!

Season 1 - 3 are on Netflix. Season 1 is okay but it doesn't start getting amazing (in my mind) until 2, especially when Adam Scott and Rob Lowe join the cast!

Go watch it. Now.

A few days ago I saw four pictures back to back that made me stop and do the whole "oooo" and "awww" thing. Now, if you follow MY account, you know I go through repinning bursts quite often. However, these four repins caught my eye and so I checked out the rest of their boards!

Pretty, unique, creative, and fun. That's what they both are.

Three pictures (the left two and the bottom right one) were repinned from The Paris Apartment.
One picture (top right) was repinned from Shelby Owens.

Cover reveal: ASPEN by Rebekah Crane

You better believe we're pumped for the release of Rebekah Crane's new YA contemporary novel, ASPEN!

Now, let's look at that beauty!

About the book:

One quiet night in Boulder, Colorado, Aspen Yellow-Sunrise Taylor made a mistake.

In the next instant, her life changed forever.

Aspen doesn't want to remember when Katelyn Ryan, a sleek-haired popular soccer player, crossed the yellow line in her car and smashed into Aspen's. But forgetting is pretty hard- because Katelyn may have died - but she didn't leave. Her ghost is following Aspen around, and heading into senior year, it's kind of a problem. Especially when Katelyn's gorgeous former boyfriend Ben appears to be the only person at school with a clue as to how Aspen feels.

Popularity, college, Homecoming Court, hot guys - none of these things ever mattered to Aspen. She's been busy trying to rein in her giant mass of blonde curls, keep her stoner mother Ninny away from Toaster, her mom's awful bongo drumming boyfriend, and prevent her best friends Kim and Cass from killing - or kissing - one another. But with Ben sitting next to her in Physics looking all too gorgeous, Katelyn's spirit dogging her steps, and her obsessive snow-globe collecting therapist begging her to remember all the things she wants to forget, Aspen is thrust into a vivid, challenging world she can't control … and doesn't want to.

A darkly funny, emotionally gripping story of opening up, letting go, and moving on, ASPEN is about the best-worst accident of your life ... and what comes next.

Release Date: January 2014
Category: YA contemporary
And an awesome cover reveal isn’t complete without an equally AWESOME giveaway, so let’s tell them what they can win... *dramatic pause*

About Rebekah Crane:

Rebekah Crane fell in love with YA literature while studying Secondary English Education at Ohio University, but it wasn't until ten years and two daughters later that she started to write it. Inspired by her past students, growing up in Cleveland with its fabulous musical theater community, and music of all kinds (particularly the Avett Brothers), she created PLAYING NICE. It is her first published novel, but having an unbridled imagination, it's not the only fantasy world she's lived in (just ask her husband). ASPEN, her second YA creation, is set to release in January 2014. She now lives in Colorado, where the altitude only enhances the experience.

Want to know what's sexy?

Book clubs.

Want to know what's even sexier?

A book club dedicated to The Wasted Series by C. Elizabeth Vescio.

I know, I know...we talk about her and the series A LOT around here. Read the first book and you'll see why.

So, back to heart of the matter--The Wasted Book Club.

I'll provide fun, naughty, and thought-provoking questions along with fun tidbits from Author C. Elizabeth Vescio herself!

I understand that not everyone has a webcam so I'll be looking for a text-based, chat solution to accommodate us all! (If you have any suggestions feel free to leave in a comment or email me at tylerasnell@gmail.com!)

For now I'd like to share the link to sign up: click this, you lovely creature,  you.
Don't worry, I'll keep you in the loop!

Now, let's talk about something kickass for a second.

Starting today you can become a Vassassin

What the what? Listen, it's the damn bee's knees.

The Vassassins are a group of people (chicks AND dudes) that make up a street team for C. Elizabeth Vescio and The Wasted Series. What's a street team? It's a support system for both the author and the series--a gathering of readers and fans ready to help promote both.

Not to mention, once you become a Vassassin, you'll be a part of killer community!

Sign up and you get access to a point system that, if you decide to participate, can yield some badass rewards. Not to mention you'll get access to some awesome resources that any fan of the series will love.

Need more info.? Go here! Want to sign up? Go here!

Have any questions? Email me at tylerasnell@gmail.com.

Did I mention I'm team captain? Because I AM!

The back of our books

So, what are these books we've been talking so much about? If they had covers and all, this is what you might find on the back of the books! Both of our titles are very much in progress, but we'd love some feedback on our summaries!

Conner Moon, the son of a Senator and a rising star in the Mobile District Attorney's office, has lived a pretty comfortable life in south Alabama with one exception: the death of his sister.

When an disheveled woman shows up at his front door 13 years later looking for help, Conner discovers his sister, Danni, might not be as dead as he thought.

As Conner seeks out his long-lost sister, he finds himself tangled in a web of lies about his past and comes face to face with a truth he isn't sure he can handle: his greatest enemy is a lot closer than he ever imagined.

With the help of his wife and his best friend, Conner must tackle dangerous territory and countless dead ends to save the one person that will keep his world together before its too late.

Goodwyn knows one thing for certain: telling the truth can be deadly. After a hormone-driven fight leads to her mother’s suicide, she vows to never let her web of lies get tangled again.

Fast-forward eight years later, she's consumed her life in lies and the real Goodwyn has fallen between the cracks. That is, until she meets a man who offers her a job at an interactive PR company—a position that would utilize her lying strengths while paying her the big bucks for it. She would be a part of a team of fellow liars—each with a secret past that may put her own horror to rest.

Before she can officially accept, she is thrown into a job that puts her deep into the throngs of rich socialites, sexist old men, and straight into a world that she has to pretend she’s always belonged to, all in order to uncover the plans of a handsome billionaire…or to be there when the bottom falls out afterward. What was supposed to be a fact-finding job turns into a painful, terrifying, and eye-opening experience that leaves Goodwyn questioning everything.

Now Goodwyn is caught in an underground war between two powerful groups, the desire to finally tell the truth, and the promise she made to herself long ago to uphold her new life of lies at all costs. A struggle made harder by the new reality that the people the company are interested in are a little more extraordinary than she thought.

The summer of victory!

Tyler and I both took on one ambitious goal last month: Writing books.

A month later, and thanks to National Novel Writing Month's Summer Camp (CampNaNoWriMo), we both succeeded in cranking out those first drafts.

She wrote a synopsis on her book-writing process here, and today I thought I'd share mine.

The backstory

I actually started my book last November. I had a dream about the opening scene, woke up and wrote it out. I kept going for the next 50 or so pages with only this vague idea of what exactly this book was going to be about. I had to let the story begin to come to life before I could really develop a concrete plot.

If you're a regular follower of this blog, you know that a few months after November, I was busy getting married (and preparing for that), so the book took a huge spot on the backburner. I would write still, but it was sporadic and random.

Still, I kept talking the plot over with some trusted writer friends (like Tyler, my rock) and developing the story in my head.

When I heard about NaNoWriMo's summer camp, I immediately jumped on board. Sure, July is hands down not the easiest month to tackle a huge project, but what really is?

The writing process

Two things are true about my writing style: Sitting down and doing it every day is a challenge; a mandated word count is hard to meet.

I had to do both of those things in July, and somedays that was a gigantic hurdle. We went out of town a lot that month (hello, summertime!). I still had to write.

If I was sick or just tired from working or anything else, I still had to write.

The discipline got easier for me at the end. Actually I did not start camp off with a bang but rather eased my way into meeting my daily word counts and being anti-social when needed.

At the beginning of the month, the whole thing was pretty daunting to me. Somewhere in the middle I started to get in a groove and fell in love with writing all over again. And by the end I was just rushing, tired and ready to finish.

Now what?
I definitely have taken a good week or so to just relish in the whole completing a first draft process.

Now, it's time to buckle down and write the second draft, get it readable and as Tyler said, beg beta readers to read it for me!

And definitely lots of blogging. I actually have a super huge announcement coming in a separate post soon, soon, soon!
